The use of the digital X-ray machine enables the veterinarian to more accurately evaluate orthopedic problems in a much shorter time frame. The turn around time from taking the picture to viewing it on the screen is three seconds. Before this technology was available, all the pictures had to be taken back to the clinic to be developed and evaluated. The equipment is user friendly and very portable. Stall side pictures can be taken and allow for immediate evaluation for quality of the picture and diagnosis of the condition. If the radiograph is of poor quality or not the correct view (angle) it can be retaken immediately. A magnification feature of the software allows the veterinarian to closely evaluate any areas of interest. Side by side views of different pictures can be assessed with this equipment and copies can be made on a CD for storage or referral to another veterinarian for a second opinion. The radiographs can also be sent over the internet to anywhere in the world. The software available with the equipment also allow areas such as the stifle, shoulder and head to be more clearly and accurately evaluated.
The Metron™ software available with the equipment will allow critical evaluation of the hoof. With this information the veterinarian can discuss with the horse owner’s farrier any suggestion concerning trimming and shoeing of their animal. Use of this technology may allow diagnosis as well as possible prevention of potential future problems with regard to the hoof.
