EQUINE SARCOID
Skin tumors of the horse are relatively uncommon. One of the most common type of skin tumor in the horse is the sarcoid. This tumor can appear anywhere on the horse from the face to the tail region. They vary in appearance from relatively flat to protruding growths that have a tendency to bleed if traumatized. These tumors may appear at different sites on the body but do not metastasize or spread to the internal organs of the horse.
These tumors can be difficult to treat an often recur or reappear after treatment or removal. One type of treatment that can be tried is the one used here. (Fig. A) Surgery was not an option in this case because of the definite possibility of permanent disfiguring of the upper eyelid. An immunostimmulant (Eqstimä) was injected directly into the tumor. Three weeks later (Fig. B) marked reduction in size of the tumor was seen. It has since then continued to shrink.
